Raised by her mother and grandmother, she learned at a young age how to survive in the wilds. From her grandmother, she was taught how to build a sturdy shelter, how to identify and gather edible fruits and plants, how to cook, how to prepare herbs to heal wounds and sickness. From her aunts and uncle she learned how to track and hunt. From her mother she learned how to wield an axe, how to fight, defend, and kill. She was sixteen years old when she and couple of her cousins went on a hunting trip. It took three days to track down the large boar and kill it. When they returned home, they found their camp destroyed. Tents burned, equipment destroyed, and the dead bodies of their families and friends scattered about. They stayed hidden while they investigated. It looked like the ambush happened two days ago. The fire had gone out, the bodies cold. When she found the mutilated bodies of her mother and grandmother, she wailed into the sky. Mourning the loss. They spent the next couple of days performing the funeral rites, burning the dead bodies. Then they went hunting. Tracking the signs left behind the marauders. But soon the signs turned cold. Knowing that they wouldn’t survive alone, they reluctantly traveled south to join the civilization. They stayed in outskirt villages and towns. Trading meat and fur, and doing odd jobs to earn coin. One of the cousins died in a hunting accident, the other married and settled down in a small village. Alone, she joined a traveling merchant as a guard and traversed the land for couple of years. Always keeping an ear open, hoping to find a clue to get her revenge. She's not tall but still there is a strength in her. Athletic body, wearing fur and leather armor strategically covering her. She has tattoos on her neck and arms, and carries a big battle axe and a long bow. You can see the scars all over her body, signs of a warrior. She wears one pauldron over her left shoulder, made of hide and fur. You can see bits and pieces of cloths, bones, and small metal pieces. Trophies of her kills and battles. Unless she's working, she can be found at a tavern, either drinking with her friends or gambling. From druid groves to the sewers beneath the thieves’ den, the rifts have raised a ruckus with the rats, twisting them into monstrous, raging beasts! The Mortal Guardians helped drive back their numbers, and in the midst of handling the menace, adventurers completed tasks to aid both the thieves’ and mages’ guilds of Wintervaeld. Curiosities remain, however, as the ardent heroes discovered ominous notes signed only by "Z", which promise power and reward for those who tamper with the rifts, exploiting them for advantage. Who or what is "Z"? And what do they hope to achieve by driving others into the danger of the rifts? We will find out soon as The Mortal Guardians continues! ----------------------------------------------- Went to the Guild Hall to earn some coin. Saw an Half Elf woman named Aelwin talking to the Guild Master Artem. She was looking for help finding the bard (Trillian) at her mother's (Ealdfride) Inn - Dancing Dagger, about 20min walk from the outside the city. Large wooden building with multiple stories. Outside, various patrons were milling about, talking about rats and other rumors. Found out that the guild mistress and her second stayed behind to make sure all the patrons made it out. Inside on the first floor, saw a large dining hall to the right, with tables and chairs all askew, stage at the front of the room and a bar and the door to the kitchen on the back. Stairwell to the upstairs - rooms for rent. left side of the floor had wall dividing the rooms - private meeting rooms, offices, etc. Heard a sound of glasses clinking behind the bar. A halfling drinking, telling us stories of larger rats. Says he saw the rats taking the Ealdfride the Guild Mistress and her second Waldric, down to the basement. That there was something strange afoot here. Conspiracy. Went to the office, stairway to the basement. Came to a room with seemingly no other exit. Aelwin opens a secret door and there is another stairs headed below. Large room with more tables and chairs but none of it look to have been disturbed. Various doorways and corridors lead in and out of this room. Aelwin leads the group down a maze to a warehouse. Full of crates with markings with other business establishments. Pevo finds a notebook that belonged to Waldric, realizing that this was an inside job. We hear a sound and Pevo sneaks into the room, finding three large rats. We battle them and rescue Denic (a thief of the thieves guild that Ealdfride runs along with the inn) who tells us that the rats dragged them to the sewers. We had down the sewers, find a drag mark on the ground. We ambush two more large rats feasting up on a dead body of a tiefling. We follow the corridor until it opens into a large room with a cistern in the center, and two humanoids tied from a rope, hanging from above. As we approach, a giant RatMan appears. Named Waldric. We fight him and I land the killing blow. We rescue everyone. Find a rift that we must report to the guild master. I take a souvenir - piece of cloth. We receive a writ from Elfreed to return to the guild hall for job well done - three jobs. Gold earned - 4PP + 51GP. Level up to level two. Important Note: Found a letter of boon, promising Waldric power if he stepped closer to the rift. Signed with a flourish, letter Z. FallenAngelRidian Posted October 27, 2022 Author Share Posted October 27, 2022 (edited) Act 1 E03: A Course on Jealousy Brave heroes from The Mortal Guardians ventured to a remote school of mages called Arcamaryndel, where reports had emerged that dangerous undead had overrun the grounds--and not even armed soldiers from nearby Cindervaeld were able to defeat them! Within the school's great tower the intrepid adventurers discovered that one of the students, an elf named Rin, had opened a rift and used its energy to commit ruinous acts of violence as he seized control of the school and turned the wicked powers against his former classmates. Aided by the twins, Elle and Mara, as well as the ghost of another former student, Morrik, the heroes defeated Rin and a whole host of monstrous beings before at last confronting the true threat: agents of the dark and mysterious Coven of Zul who have at last emerged as the mind behind the menace of the rifts. Aided by the young armsman, Rian, their investigation quickly discovered the body of Brother Vonna, whom the town's high priest, Father Ibor, had twisted and manipulated into luring unfortunate victims into danger. After battling skeletons and pursuing Father Ibor, the Guardians discovered an old temple where the high priest had been sacrificing townspeople, including Rian's guardsman brother Davin, to an arcane rift! The heroic Mortal Guardians defeated Ibor and closed the rift discovering yet another letter from the mysterious "Z" which directed Father Ibor towards exploiting the rift. With their duties in Anlaine fulfilled and joined by young Rian as a new Mortal Guardian, the brave heroes returned to Wintervaeld to prepare for whatever dangers lay ahead. There they discovered true horror: a mass grave revealing that the coven had been testing dark and foul magics on unwilling subjects. After rescuing the tiefling paladin, Valora, the group decided to abandon their orders to avoid conflict with the nobility and save as many people as they could: they quickly breached a house of healing where the coven was keeping people falsely under the guise that they were infected with a deadly contagion. Securing the safe escape of these hostages, they then pushed the battle deep into the chambers of a secret temple to vile and departed old gods. There, with the help of their brothers and sisters under the Everburning Light, the brave heroes vanquished a dark mage and her evil paladin guardian--none other than the youngest son of Lord Vaarelixian. After the group's escape, no less than hours later, the Vaarelixian house declared war on the Mortal Guardians, ensuring that dark days lay ahead. Level 3 Magical Item: Got a Bag of Holding as the uncommon magic item. Switched it out to a Greataxe +1. Gold Earned: 36pp + 360gp +30gp for selling my Greataxe. Game 1 / 4 to level up to 4. Luring several Guardians into the courtyard, denizens of the coven and the Vaarelixian noble family opened an immensely powerful rift to unleash its dark and fell energies on our friends. Pulled in by the surging tide, several Guardians were thrown through the veil between life and death and into the desolate landscape of the Plane of Shadow where they witnessed the nature of the horror behind the rift crisis: an immeasurable melding of Far Realm monstrosity and deathly menace taking the form of countless towers with rifts at their pinnacles. Upon one such tower, the vigilant Guardians battled relentless and bizarre voidriven ghouls and a malevolent Voidheart Darkcaster--beings twisted and warped by the power of the rifts. Aided by the strange, curious being known as Vex, the group of Mortal Guardians ascended the tower and defeated the darkcaster--thereby closing the rift and sending them back home safe at last! Ghosts of those slain in the attack lingered within the halls and made curious, grim appearances--and one such apparition was the remnant of an assassin! Relying on their bravery, wit, and knowledge of the arcane, several Guardians were able to draw this spirit from the veil and discern its malcontent: she was the soul of a Saregezan immigrant who sought to be reunited with a keepsake from her former life. Taking clues about the spirit's identity, the Guardians were able to track the woman's path from an orphanage in Waterdeep to the band of mercenaries known as the Dancing Swell. After reuniting the spirit with her prized possession, the heroes learned from the mercenaries' leader that the group had been hired by a scriveners company called Pont & Mortagne--a front enterprise in the service of none other than the Conductor! The brave Mortal Guardians confronted and defeated Malise Mortagne and recovered crucial documentation detailing the Conductor's treachery, his collusion with nobility, and plans from the attack against the Mortal Guardians headquarters. With clues in hand, they were ready to pursue further leads--when an unlikely and critically important figure emerged in their midst: none other than Enimity Pont herself, the partner and protégé of Malise! Her fiend identity all but confirmed, Pont offered the Guardians a deal: help her recover an precious gemstone from a devil rival, and she pledged to give the Guardians what they needed most: details about the evasive and enigmatic Conductor including his whereabouts. Setting out with Pont as their guide and facilitator, the Guardians trekked through the desolate wastes of the realm of Dis, the second of the Nine Hellas of Baator! There they infiltrated a ranking devil's seasonal estate and, with some frightful challenges, recovered the stolen gem--which was revealed to contain the soul of Pont's partner, Malise Mortagne! With their bargain fulfilled, the Mortal Guardians survived a confrontation with the lord of the manor, Atruviliel the Baneful, and returned safely to Wintervaeld with vital information on the Conductor's whereabouts! There they confronted and defeated nefarious brigands who revealed that they were hired by the Coven of Zul to thwart any search for the missing Mortal Guardian. Following the trail, the group ventured into the nearby swamps and encountered strange new denizens of darkness crafted by the evil magic of the coven: hideous rift ghouls given the power to rend their victims' minds. With the unlikely aid of the druid, Nalga'tura, previously hired by the cult--as well as assistance from the enigmatic witch, Old Fel--the group destroyed the ghouls and followed a path to an ancient keep deep in the heart of the forest. There they breached the keep, defeated the coven's minions, and saved their missing agent: none other than young Rian of Amphail! Additionally, the guild captured a valuable asset at the keep: a courier working for the mysterious and brutally efficient industrialist known only as the Conductor. Discovering an alliance between the Coven of Zul and the Conductor bodes ill for the future of the world, but it gives the Mortal Guardians vital knowledge about the machinations of their enemies--and the perilous road ahead. With new information gained from this effort, the Guardians' agent, Mason, uncovered a plot to strike the very heart of Wintervaeld’s governance: a crippling attack during the annual Feast of Autumn which would kill many nobles and civilian officials. The Coven of Zul planned to disrupt the event and open devastating rifts to both decimate the nobility, improving the status of their ally, Lord Durevant Vaarelixian, and also weaken the defensive ability of the city as a whole. The Mortal Guardians acted swiftly, sending their best few adventurers to counter the plot--and they fought boldly, engaging and defeating no fewer than three attempts to open rifts into the Plane of Shadow! The actions of these brave adventurers earned them several accolades--including a title!--and the appreciation and loyalty of noble houses of Wintervaeld. One of these houses belongs to Lady Helagarde Tanrevahla--the very daughter of Lord Durevant Vaarelixian! With Helagarde's backing and her cooperation against her father, the Guardians organized a strike against his summer estate at Red Dragon Falls in the foothills of the Sword Mountains. There, the brave heroes carved a path through the grounds and breached a temple of Tyr which had been converted into a vile sanctuary for the mad necromancer, Eryaphos Annokrates. Following a fierce battle, the Guardians destroyed Annokrates and captured valuable evidence against both the Coven of Zul and House Vaarelixian--though the demise of Annokrates suggests that death may not be his final demise. With the materials in hand, the Guardians gained the crucial support of the noble houses--and consequently the right to fight back against House Vaarelixian without the threat of broad reprisal in Wintervaeld.
