What made you decide on playing a gnome fighter? 
 

What can you tell us about his backstory before he joined the group??

What made you decide on playing a gnome fighter? 

At the time, the party had two full casters and one martial character so I wanted to supplement the composition in a way that made sense. I had not played a fighter yet so decided on that route. I wanted to be sturdy but in a different way than my other character (paladin). I started researching subclasses and found that there was not a lot of play around the cavalier subclass so I picked that. I did not want to deal with having a mount with a large classification so I needed to pick a smaller race that would allow me to ride a medium sized creature. So I decided on a gnome cavalier Panther Knight.
 

What can you tell us about his backstory before he joined the group??

Cecil is from a hidden city in a dark wood. They are intentionally isolationist and prefer keeping to themselves. They have a rare and unique commodity that their neighbors would surely like to have but it is the lifeblood of their civilization and are not keen on sharing with them. They do limited trade but only with distant contacts. Cecil had a prominent role in the military in guarding this rare commodity. However, he made a mistake that cost gnomish blood and a devastating loss for the entire city. He was luckily only banished for his failure. After that, he wandered the woods around his old home trying to make a positive distance in the world and repent. He was eventually captured by a rough bandit crew and was rescued as the party moved to eliminate a threat after the Skyfall Crisis.

What is Cecil’s relationship with the other PCs? 

Cecil was slow to trust, really the first people who talked to him after his banishment. He was always slow to trust "outsiders" so it took some time but he came to trust them eventually with time. 

He both respects Avi for her leadership and sticking to her word and is like 30% scared of her because she is rather dark right under the surface and definitely has some shadows chasing her. He is in awe of her musical talent.

He sees Bracken as a respectable fighter and companion. They have fought together side by side keeping things away from their more fragile companions for quite awhile so he trusts him completely in a fight. Cecil is not super in to Bracken's cooking and he might think he is a bit timid outside of a fight; maybe even shy and lacking in confidence.

Originally, When Bracken started out as a fairy, I wanted to play something light and frilly as its complete foil. A crass, rough and tumble, dirty deeds brawler. The change to Kender came with release of Dragonlance and the racial taunt feature seemed very fitting to the character overall. Looking back, I probably should have tried to just fold it in with the character as they were, but the story development for it was enjoyable, so I don't entirely mind the changes. The fighter/monk hybrid was intended to work out a class that hit with fists, and hit hard. Originally, I was planning on playing out a drunken fist monk, but the character felt fleshed out before I got to develop that angle. There's still everything there mechanically, and I suppose time will tell if the story opens for it. Backstory wise, I wanted to do a rags to rags, someone who tries to get better but has trouble learning from mistakes. Also, somebody that will do good, and try not to do bad, but good for selfish reasoning (doing a good deed to get paid, helping someone because it spites someone who slighted them, etc.). Originally, Bracken had no plans of helping his uncle, he was gonna make it to Winterveiled and become hired muscle, simple as that. Things change, of course, but whether Bracken's really changed for the better is a debate.

Bracken overall does believe in magic, but he sees it as more of a fad or a party trick than something useful. No matter the spell significance, Bracken assumes there is an alternative way to get things done, mostly through non magical means. He was never good with magic, and everyone he grew up with (being from the fey) magic was similar to breathing, so he just put his efforts into other ventures. Bracken is overall neutral to magic, with an attitude to it similar to sleight of hand magic we know, with more positive or negative responses according to who is doing the magic, whether it be someone close or a stranger.

I like to think of Bracken as more of a realist, with a lean to the negative side. Past experiences overall leave him more untrustworthy of new experiences, but not outright closed out. He is very quick, however, to form opinions of people and situations to where his decisions could be seen very much as cynical.

Tari was in a rough spot and didn't hesitate to ask for help, and that's something Bracken has trouble with. Seeing someone who has been nothing but kind and helpful to others for the sake of it was something new to Bracken, and he knew it came from a kind soul. Between that and Tari being a cutie Bracken was smitten. It helps that Tari is just as inexperienced with the situation, as it lets Bracken take his time understanding things, and vice versa.

What inspired Z’s character - class/race & personality?

I wanted to try and create a character that was more in depth as compared to my other characters. there is a youtube video by Ginny Di where she shows her process of making D&D characters for her campaigns. I knew that I wanted to make a character that used necromancy and created things that were once used by evil people, hence I chose the Home-brew Artificer class: The Bone Cobbler. I chose the Changling race for Z because of their history for being known as " mischievous" and "deceptive" I thought that this would fit with the class that I chose and thought it would help figure out who they were as a person. However, it did not. The problem I had was fleshing out their personality and who they were as an individual before "Scions of the Skyfire". They have the INTP personality and I was heavily inspired by characters such as: Conner (Detroit: Become Human), Sherlock (BBC Sherlock), and Arthur (Inception). These were the main characters that I found to be the most similar to Z in terms of how they act and think. I also wanted to make a character that I wish I could sympathize with and understand how they were feeling at any given time. I think this has greatly helped in making them believable as a character. (at least i hope so! lol)

 

How did Z meet the party??

Before they met the party, they were looking for answers as to what their ailments were and how to fix them with their very own magic. However, there was another one who was affected by it that they deeply cared about. Sylvia. Their best friend and unconfessed lover. Z regrets never telling Sylvia that they loved her before she died of the Veil Burned. After her passing, Z began looking for answers. answers that could bring her back. Eventually, this led to Z meet Lady Yoraxibis. Through their research for answers, they discovered Yoraxibis in Gloomnour and travelled to her place of residence. From what I remember, both discussed and talked for quite some time before Z joined the party. The reason they joined was because they are looking for information to help them in learning new techniques within the world of necromancy to help bring back Sylvia.  

 

What are their thoughts on the party members individually?

They (as of late) have been really wondering if joining the party was a good idea. They really are concerned that they feel more like a burden than anything else. This is more what they think about each character after recent events. (This is me writing as Z)

Avi: I thought that we had more in common, but I don't think that we do. I think that she despises me because I try to attach logic to things that are not, in any way, logical. I am really sick and tired of how she has treated me and I am no longer willing to keep letting her do this to me. I guess it is time to show her reflection of herself. I wish that we could stand together rather than have this childish rivalry. Maybe in another life.  

Cecil: He is quiet and shares only what is most important to the situation at hand. I have a deep appreciation for what he shares when he shares it. I admire his character and respect him for what he is doing for the team as a whole. I hope that, whatever he is working towards, he accomplishes it with the greatness amount of success possible. He is also a kind and patient person. He really reminds me a little bit of my mentor, Rodrick.

Bracken: He is an interesting character. He shoots off at the mouth and has made me laugh for the first time in what feels like eons. I have never laughed that hard in a long time. He is a brave warrior and fights all enemies with such vigor. I wish I could face creatures like he does with anything backfiring or blowing up in my face. I hope that he could teach me someday. probably not right now while we are in this maze of death and danger. 

 

What’s Z’s favorite dish of Bracken’s breakfast??

The wonderful "Brack-fest" of Episode 69. Personally I would eat that in real life! it sounded unbelievably delicious!! Even though they show very little emotion, they feel some comfort in Bracken's breakfasts.

What inspired Avi’s personality & race/class?

I wanted something that, on the surface, was rather unassuming and innocent. A little lady who is just always humming to herself and knows a few spells isn't really all that intimidating at first glance. Her ability to get into someone's head and really mess them up mentally is something I really vibed with from the jump. The College of Whispers and Shadow Magic in addition to the Shadow Depletion has taken the inside and put it on (almost) full display.

What happened to Avi’s husband? Is he really dead? Or does Avi believe him to be dead?

Egan was a soldier. He got called away to battle and he didn't come home. There were reports that made their way back to Avi in Anlaine detailing the number of casualties and missing from the area he was sent to, and she assumed the worst. There was no word after that. She tried Sending to him and the spell found no target, so she believes him to be dead. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen.

What attracted Avi to Ran?

Avi was drawn to Ran before she met her. She was the closest to her when she initially emerged from her petrification. At first, though, there wasn't really an attraction but more of a curiosity. When the party separated in Wintervaeld and word came to meet at the tavern, Avi thought she was more excited to see Ainsel who she was close to from the start, but the moment she saw Ran, she felt a pang in her stomach she knew she felt before but couldn't place for a long time. When she realized it was the same feeling she felt the first time she saw Egan, she knew there was something special there waiting to happen.

What is Avi’s strength? Her flaw?

Avi's biggest strength is her determination and her honesty. She has always been one to start a job and finish it and she has always kept her word, one way or another. That being said, she has a history of repeating past behaviors, whether it be trying to run from her problems or some other things that may not have come to light.

What does Avi think of each of the party members? 

Cecil, in Avi's opinion is the most trustworthy. She can count on him to be straight forward with her in most situations. She is also extremely invested in his bongo playing and truly wants to see him improve that skill (though she would hesitate to tell him his playing is awful). Avi feels connected to Cecil in a way the others might not understand, also coming from a large family and the struggles that come with being away from them (also being the only one in the party to have actually spoken to someone from Cecil's family).

When it comes to Bracken, Avi chooses to shove all the bad stuff to the side and only sees good things, and that's maybe a fault on her part. Brackfast(TM) is her favorite meal and she always eats it without complaining even when the bacon is basically charcoal. She sees potential in Bracken. Potential that maybe he doesn't even see. She would also never admit it if asked, but Bracken is her favorite.

Z is someone Avi genuinely wants to understand. She cares about them, just like she does the others, but there is a disconnect. Something she doesn't get. She'll never understand why Z hesitates to do what has to be done, why safety and caution are suddenly a priority when they are surrounded by inevitable danger. She finds herself losing her temper more and more with Z, and she feels awful about it every time. It's more the fact that Z and Avi are so similar and so different at the same time. She struggles with it constantly, but she really wants to make it work.  

Will she or won’t she?? (You know what I’m talking about!!)

The Nahtrianna situation is a complication. Avi is in a place that is messing with her mental state. She misses Ran, she is having trouble sleeping, she's lonely. Seeing Nahtrianna smile sparked an attraction that Avi wont deny, but is actively trying to ignore. There is a comforting light and warmth that comes from Nahtrianna that Avi is craving, but at the same time, she is starting to fall in love with Ran, and she is doing her best to block it out so she can focus on getting this job finished to she can get back.

I chose Frysta's class an personality as I always wanted to play a martial, but ended up getting bored of them 3 sessions in. So I challenged myself to create a martial character that offered more versatility "she hits things" without delving too far in to homebrew or flavouring. An Eladrin is a race with innate teleportation and Trance gives access to 2 skills that can be used for tools, and Blood Hunters are a martial class with access to hemocraft, blood curses and elemental damage on attacks, as well as offering a subclass with pact slots. I really wanted to enjoy this campaign so I tried to give myself as much as possible without being op, just versatile.
Frysta's personality is a mix of a few of my others.
The fae-like curiosity of Ciara
The standoff ready to fight aspects of Blaze
The obsessive inquisitiveness of Cameron
 I wanted to take my favourite aspects of past characters and pack them in to an angsty Eladrin and see how it would play out (not bad so far).

Frysta thinks very highly of her teammates, pc & npc. Everyone has their own little quirks and strengths, as well as weaknesses.

Frysta feels a connection with Tala due to their somewhat similar situations. Frysta is new to Vaelda Mortalis and is trying to navigate a new world in search for information, while Tala is new to the city and social aspects of Vaelda Mortalis and is trying to navigate new surroundings in search for information. Frysta believes Tala has a very good heart and the inner strength to do some really good things. Frysta is eager to offer Tala guidance as she knows what its like to be in a new place with no idea how to get by.

Andy reminds Frysta of home. Whimsical personality, musical talent and a silver tongue. There have been moments when Frysta wondered if Andy hailed from Vaelda Faera herself, given the familiarity in her traits. However, any doubts are swiftly dispelled by Andy's professionalism and her ability to handle serious situations with responsibility and grace.
Frysta thinks Andy tries to hold too much of the world on her little shoulders, and she wishes to help, however she is careful not to overstep any boundaries.

Frysta wants to study Rhae under a microscope like a bug. If there's anything more dangerous than a criminal, it is a criminal learning magic, and Frysta admires that about them. Rhae hasn't been with us long, but Frysta can see the similarities in their personalities and is excited for some downtime in the future to solidify their friendship.

Captain Ealdric is a very powerful ally...however... Frysta has a problem with authority figures and city expectations in Vaelda Mortalis. Frysta began using Ealdric's signature and likeness out of spite "Take away all my disguises and fake ID's. Fine. I guess I'll just take yours" because in her weird faerie mind, that was an acceptable come back.
She has recently learned that she shouldn't do that, and is deeply saddened that she may have gotten in the way of the party and any powerful ally/favour.

Frysta crimson rite does hurt, and there are visible 4th degree frost bite scars on her limbs (Like a gradient going from a necrotic black to her pale skin).
When she activates Rite of the cold, her hands frosts over.
When she activates Rite of the storm, she is surrounded by fog and clouds, with tiny strands of blue light striking her.
For her blood curses, her eyes glaze over and frost begins to form tracing up and around her veins, creating these lightning-like patterns as she concentrates on the curse.

What inspired you for Andy’s class/race & personality?

I hadn't played a spellcaster before, so I wanted to do that. I also liked the idea of being charismatic, so bard fit well. For her race, I wanted to try out the Lucky racial feature, and the lightfoot subrace seemed more lighthearted. For the personality, I wanted a big family for her. Not even consciously aware of the ubiquitous large halfling family trope, I wanted a large family for her. That grew into a whole clan and then a whole community. However, I wanted Andy to be a little on the outside of this community in order for the adventuring to make sense (without a terribly tragic backstory). This required a little distancing from her parents and siblings, so Andy would be more independent. 

What does Andy think of her party members?

Frysta: mysterious and actually deeply emotional, super good with all those skills and cooking (usually)

Tala: not as grounded as she wants to be; very connected to her group's emotions, very unsure of herself in the city

Rhae: curiously secretive figure, but a fellow wizard so yay

Ainsel: very religious but loyal

Taraminder: fellow halfling! A bit broken though? 

Lorcann: trouble - reminds Andy a lot of her brother Karick

Rannon: a bit aloof in a nice way; reserved

What’s Andy’s strength and her flaw?

strength is that Riz - she loves performing for folks and getting them to feel what she wants them too

Her flaw is that she fears disappointing and losing people; she can be clingy, and she has a particular undeserved respect for those above her - elders, captains, figures of lore. 

What’s her favorite performance to date?? 

HMMMMM...

She loves performing with people, and there were several great performances with her siblings and family

Otherwise, when she perfectly captures the mood of the time and place she performs, that is very special. I believe at Berigg's funeral service was special as well as maybe once soon before Cari left.

What inspired the class/race & personality for Rhae??

Honestly just think Tieflings are pretty cool and I wanted to do some magic lol. Personality wise is still developing but I'm aiming for a chaotic bundle of energy sometime soon. 

What does Rhae think of her party members?

She thinks they're all pretty fun! I probably won't write all as she doesn't really know how to feel about everyone yet.

Tala: Thinks Tala is adorable! Hopes she takes care of herself especially if she leaves for long nights out.

Andy: Nerd (lovingly) but in all seriousness loved spending time with Andy copying off each other's spell books. Another wizard is always welcome!

Frysta: Enjoys Frysta's chaotic personality. After seeing her become engrossed in the interesting book and seeing the interactions with her and Captain Ealdric, she believes her and Frysta will become great friends given time. 

Ainsel: Not entirely sure, but he seems to have good intentions so he's good in her book. 

Lorcann: Believes he has a bit screws loose but finds his interesting three B's quite amusing.

What does Rhae think of Dio? Is she worried about dating a city guard??

Since we're not yet into the 'romance arc' she doesn't really have an opinion yet. We'd have to see how it goes first. I do believe there will be a bit nervousness.

I think she does, but at the same time is too ashamed to go find or see them, especially after getting sent to the prison island.

1. If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?  Neither.  I have no regrets so no need to travel to the past.  I want to experience everything so wouldn't want to travel to the future.  I like living in the moment.  

2. What is the first thing you notice about a person?  Their expressions and body language to gauge what kind of person they are.  

3. What’s the best way to spend a rainy day?  Out in the garden, feel the rain drops on my shell and wet dirt under my hands and feet.  Or watching Andy play her instruments.  

4. What are your biggest fears?  Letting my friends down.  Being in a position where I can't help/heal them.  

5. What are your favorite pick up lines?  "I'm looking for an experience."

6. What smells make you happy?  Fresh flowers, my tobacco, and my smell bag.  

7. What is love to you?  Happiness.  When I think of them, it puts a smile on my face.  Makes my heart feel full, and makes me want to spend time with them.  

8. Are you an organized person? Is your bedroom tidy?  I have separate bags to help me organize when I travel.  My bedroom and greenhouse is bit chaotic as I let nature create their harmony.

49. If you could tell your friends one thing, what would it be?  Andy - that Taraminder loves her.  Frysta - that I think that Ainsel likes her romantically.  Rhae - that she can trust me, and that I'll protect her.  Taraminder - that I have a crush on her.
